- Sorry, with all the problems I'm having getting a working version
- of BM 1.93a (and a copy of the WAD file), I haven't got around to posting
- any thoughts about the project.
-
- First, the subject of music.
-
- It should of course be as configurable as possible. That's been
- made clear by others. Midi, tracker or none for in game and a seperate
- option for intermediary screens (intro, map screen etc.)
-
- I personally don't think any music is neccessary while playing I
- would rather have FX alone and keep the processing time for a faster screen
- update. When I played Doom on the Mac over Christams, it didn't have any
- music (an extension wasn't turnned on or something) and I didn't miss it.
-
- Music does add greatly to the atmosphere in films, but that's
- because it's made to react to what's going on on the screen. It increases
- in intensity as someone creeps up to peek round a dark corner etc. This
- rarely works in games because the music can't (or doesn't usually) react
- intelligently to what's going on on the screen. It tends to be like having
- the stereo on at the same time. (No CPU or DSP overheads at all) ;-) In
- Stardust there's a constant manic tune which reflects the constantly manic
- gameplay perfectly, but Doom isn't like that, there are tense
- creeping-about moments and manic run-about-shooting-wildly bits and the
- same music for both wouldn't work as well. Some games might have a more
- intense soundtrack that comes on when an end of level boss appears, or the
- tune might speed up if you get invulnerability or something but it doesn't
- usually go much further than that.
-
- I think a gameplay reactive soundtrack would be beyond the scope of
- Bad Mood, we don't have the CPU time on a base machine. Although saying
- that, I suppose there could be a soft menacing tune that plays if there
- aren't any monsters around and a manic pounding one if you're being
- attacked and an additional one for when a boss appears, so it would be
- possible, but I don't know how much processing time that would take.
- (Faster machines maybe.)
-
- I can't remember what else I was going to talk about now. I'll have
- to scan through the transcripts to have a look. 8-)
-
- See ya.
-
- Have another day.
